We are a Music Champion School!

3rd July 2019
This year, eight primary schools and three secondary schools across the local authority were awarded Music Champion Status by Leeds Music Education Partnership. Westgate was delighted to be amongst the schools chosen!  Ms Carpenter, our Music teacher Mrs Durrant and four musicians from our school orchestra went along to a ceremony at Pudsey Civic Hall, where we were presented with the award and a banner to display outside school by the chair of LMEP, Andrew Eastwood. As part of the ceremony, Georgia, Holly, Lizzie and Niamh performed two pieces from their orchestral repertoire. Westgate has a thriving music curriculum, where all children are taught to play glockenspiel, xylophone and ukulele by our specialist music teacher, Mrs Durrant. Children can also learn a wide range of instruments from the age of seven in school. In addition, Westgate has a successful choir and orchestra, with well over 60 children choosing to take part in at least one extra-curricular music activity each week on top of their classroom music lessons. We are delighted and proud to receive Music Champion status. Music is so important to our school: it spreads happiness and confidence, teaches teamwork and concentration and helps brain development. We are fortunate to have a fantastic Music specialist in Mrs Durrant, who enables so many children to find their talent and make great music, and our whole staff is committed to ensuring Music runs right through our curriculum.
