Overall Winners of Otley Carnival

18th June 2016
Once again, Friends of Westgate have done us proud. This year's Carnival theme, 'An English Country Garden', was suggested by Mia in Y6 and selected by our School Council. For the last fortnight, an army of Friends of Westgate volunteers have been in school making costumes with the children, ready for today's big event. Around 200 children and adults (parents and teachers) turned out for Westgate, dressed as flowers, fruit, vegetables, insects and mini-beasts, birds, garden gnomes and even a garden shed or two and an enormous watering can! Together with a wishing well, some artfully decorated wheelbarrows and some beautiful banners, the judges were clearly impressed by the detail and creativity on show and duly awarded Westgate the Overall Winners prize, the Lyon Landscapes Challenge Shield.
Enormous thanks and congratulations go to Steph Wood, ably supported by a fantastic band of volunteers, for making the theme come to life so effectively. And well done to the many, many people who turned out on the day to make us once again by far the biggest turn out of any organisation in the carnival! Below are some photos of the float before we set off on the parade.
UPDATE: Westgate also won the Wilkinson People's Choice Award! Here are Alex and Georgia collecting the trophy on behalf of the Friends of Westgate:
