Road safety campaigning

16th November 2021
This morning, Cllr Ryk Downes, one of Otley's Leeds City Councillors, visited school to meet with our Eco Team. They wanted to tell him about road safety issues in our area. They talked about the School Streets initiative and handed him two petitions, which have been signed by pupils in Y1 to Y6.
The first petition asks our city councillors to support the School Street initiative on Scarborough Road to be made permanent next year. The children told Cllr Downes how much safer and calmer the start and end of the day is since it came into force.
The second petition asks our city councillors to improve road crossing facilities for people trying to cross the road from the Inglewood area. The children told Cllr Downes how difficult it is to cross safely at the bottom of West Chevin Road. The petition asks councillors to work towards installing a pedestrian crossing near to the entrance of Grovehill Park, so that it is no longer necessary to cross West Chevin Road as a pedestrian.
Cllr Downes listened carefully to the children and talked with them about the issues raised. Thank you Cllr Downes for helping to get our voices heard!
